Red faction performance settings/tweaking

Last updated on 16 years ago

Red faction never seems to run smooth in multi player, unless I am on a server with just a few people. I have tried taking every possible video performance setting down to the bare minimum but I still get choppiness/glitches in the graphics. I have frequent instances of being killed w/o even seeing the enemy until after I die, they just pop up right in front of me out of nowhere.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any detailed facts for tweaking settings for red faction or has any good ideas for making it run smoother?

I am using a dell xps notebook:
2GHz p4 (m)
1 Gig of ram
vid card: geforce go 6800 ultra 256 MB
network connection is wired (not using wireless for games).
internet connection is ADSL (zoomtown if you are familiar with it).
I usually ping in the 50's or less.
P
Odd, I run it smoothly with no issues, aside from my graphics card being a pos.

And I run (currently):
CPU = AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8GHz
Ram = 768Megs (1x 256 and 1x 512)
Video Card = Nvidia GeForce FX 5200+ 128megs. (I have a 256 card but it don't work now <.<...)

It may not be any of those componets at all. It could possibly be the hard drive. After using it so much, If you're anything like me, you put it to max performance ALOT which in turn can decrease it's performance drastically from being pushed too hard. Right now I'm on a shitty 30gig IDE 5200RPM. Performance is so slow my computer lags. It's none of my other components and I know that for a fact cause when I use my new 160gig SATA 7200RPM it doesn't lag at all lol. Or even when I use my other 30gig 5200RPM, It's slower then the SATA but a hell of alot faster then this one...

Change the compatibility settings for your RF.EXE

Right Click RF.EXE - > Properties - > Compatibility - > Win 98 / Windows ME.

Make sure to run the RF.EXE and see if that works.

I'll try the compatability mode. Hope it helps. As for the comp being used a lot, ya thats a given. Knowing this, I have tried simply restarting the computer and then running red faction and it still did not help. The HD is relatively new, not even half full, and has been defragged. Thanks for the input, I hope the comatability mode helps, unfortunetly I have to waite a while before I test it. I am waiting for a DVD to finish burning.

If Ely's suggestion doesn't work, I would like to suggest Format + Reinstall.

Restarting won't do anything if the HD's performance is decreased lol. Anvil reformatting won't do anything either ;/...

I beg to differ on the restarting. Windows still does not do a good job of memory management, although it does better than win9x/me (didn't have memory management). Ram being used to capacity will cause windows to start dumping data that is not being accessed much in ram to the page file on the hd, this will show a dramatic decrease on performance if data is constantly being loaded to and from the page file. Restarting should empty both the physical memory (ram) and empty the page file on the hd. For a resource intensive user (gamers, graphic designers, media whores, whatever), this is pretty common.

edit:
I just reread the previous post and you are right, hd performance does decrease as the drive gets older/used more. The hard drive I have is less than 6 months old, so I doubt it is from hd performance being degraded from lots of use or age. The fact that red faction should be running in physical memory after it is loaded from the hd, should make HD performance not a factor (other than loading from disc to ram).

Did you try the compatibility suggestion?

Very true, BUt you should have no problems with 1gig when running RF since the minimum required, I believe, is only 64 megs. And if you have a gig, there should be no reason ram is the issue.

My suggestion was in case he had a few bugs that were eating up his CPU. :o

Oh lol. Coulda said that ;p

If you have a pci-e card, that causes problems. RF needs to be run in 98 compatibility mod then. If you are using vista, then shame on you for using an OS like that lol. Could be because all your ram is being used up. HD performance doesn't really effect this game too bad but if you feel like it is, try this program out. defraggler. I forget the site but it is free, and does a much better job than the windblows defragmentor.
Oh and if you have a dual core and you run windows, that causes issues too if you don't have a cpu driver installed.

I am running an agp system, rf runs nice and smooth for me on a 6800gt oc and on the x1950. I run Linux and windows.
P
IDk wtf everyone is talking about this Duo core issue for.
I have Vista with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz. I have no problem with it, at all.

Windows xp and lower has a dual core issue, its not just RF there are other games that do it too. Any other os is ok playing on a dual core

Yeah RF won't run on my lap due to Vista and the 4 gigs of RAM.

On my Desktop it runs fine. I just have to set the compatibilty to 98 because it's dual core
PraeTorian
As far as compatibility, what is the best setting for XP?
P
I had 4gigs of ram in here + the duo core processor, RF ran with no issues.

Dunno why everyone else got it ;D...And no, I didn't have it in compat. mode. Still don't.
G
Well my laptop is running Vista 64-bit with a C2D chip and 4gb RAM, so I have just about every bug possible. PF runs without a hitch.
P
Odd.
My GF has 3gigs of ram + Duo Core and it ran on her computer just fine, no issues.
D
There is only 2 issues that are hardware related in xp. Some PCI-E cards make it look like you have some speed hack so you need to run it in a compatible mod. The dual core problem can make you warp around like lag, mine looks like a speed hack to other players but on my side it looks just fine except I see eveyone else warping around, and I have to press reload about 15 times before it will reload.
I just stick in the dual core optimizer and I don't warp so bad people want to ban me.
