How many planets?

Since I was sick of the shoutbox being full of an argument I made this thread.

I believe there are eight planets.. since Pluto has officially left our solar system and this "new planet" found in 2003 isn't officially in our solar system.

PyRo, you say that since it was once named a planet that it will always be a planet.. so let's define the word "planet"

Quote

Planet - A celestial body that orbits the sun, has sufficient mass to assume nearly a round shape, clears out dust and debris from the neighborhood around its orbit, and is not a satellite of another planet.

Pluto is no longer in the gravitational pull of our Sun.

Do I really need to go on?

Source for this?

Under the current classification, there are really 9 though. Only thing is the definition needs to be more clearly defined as the 9th planet's orbit brings it into the gravitational pull of two stars, not just one.
P
Orbits the sun my ass. I don't thing it has to "orbit the sun" you qualify as a planet, that's stupid as fuck. That's like saying you're only retarded if you look retarded. THat's retarded. No.
It's a planet.

Yo, please take the time to read this, pretty soon they will be recognizing a lot more planets in our solar system.

http://www.planetary.org/explore/topics/pluto/new_solarsystem.html

The second thing I would like to say is, a committee designed to change the meaning of a single word in the English dictionary is complete foolishness. Just because you change the definition, does not change the fact that it was a planet.

Btw, PyRo, orbiting the sun does not have anything to do with planet status. There are planets out there which are in dead space, riding on free gravity waves that barely affect their movement. These planets are dead, incapable of a being terraformed in the (hopefully) near future.
The number one cause of death is loss of life.

This I know. THat's what I was saying.

I'm Zeldar
from the planet Beldar
Which is eight million judibeeks from Saturn
I was on my way home one day when thrown off pattern
Landed on earth
no where to go... a hole in my megaboomp
Landed in a field with green leafy trees... looked kind of odd to me
So... I (sniff)) smoked it (sniff)

I took my stellcutter, cut it and smoked it and guess how I felt
Very good, I took some for myself
Back to my spaceship, I gave some it my family
They say, "(Sniff, ahh) what you call this?" weed...
My name is Zeldar
I'm from, from planet Beldar
My leader is Zeldar
And we shop at WalMart...

i believe that the poll question was "how many planets are i OUR SOLAR system"... there for if pluto is not in the suns gravitational pull then its not a plant OUR SOLAR

ownt :)

It is still in our system.

There are 8 planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), plus an almost planet ('dwarf planet' Pluto), an almost planet that is in the asteroid belt (Ceres), and three more almost planets in the outer reaches of the solar system (Eris, Makemake, and Haumea).

Outside of the solar system, over three hundred planets have now been detected, and the current expectation is that there are many billions of planets in our galaxy and uncountable numbers of them in the universe.

no it is a planet its just not in our solar system but it is a planet.

and do you think people really have gone to the moon? because if sooo why cant we see the flag? and the pieces of car that they left behind? the moon isnt that far from us we should be able to see it.

Well Emily - we can make up little conspiracy theories until the world explodes but the fact of the matter is we won't know until we go back there, so let's wait until that day comes to judge. That way no one will have made an ass of themselves when they're proven wrong.

First off, we left pieces of a car? What would the reasoning be on that? Secondly, true, the moon isn't that far from us, considering the size of the universe. but, it is still a hell of a lot further then you sound like you are saying. Secondly, we would have to scour the moon with telescopes unless you have exact coordinates to find it by. Thirdly, if you want to see it so bad, land on the moon, or get rich and point a ton of satellites at the moon.

As stated by Desire. "Ceres" is a dwarf planet, but a "planet" nontheless. Therefore, whether Pluto is in fact still in "our" system, Ceres is. Therefore 9 would be correct. 10 if PLuto is still in fact in "our" system.

i am not making up this little conspiracy. i am just asking a questions i never said i dont think people never went to the mooon so i wont make an ass out of my self if it really turns out they did i was just asking a simple quesion goob.

and sleipnar i think my dad was the one that told me they left pieces of car parts i dont know i will google it!

i like how u all is getting so into this even though no matter what the "right" answer is it wont really effect ur life in the slightest.

also about going to the moon im not really convinced we did from what ive kno about it(which is not much)i hav jus afew questions about it. where are the stars in da pics? and why are there ripples in the flag as if there was wind. if it was jus like that why didnt the people straitin it by giving it a good tug so the pic would be better.i kno i take great pride in the flag on my arm always keep it in tip top shape so why would they leave all kinds of wrinkles in it. also didnt they goin in what was pretty much a converted missle? thats krazie they were som hardcore mferz. even the people nowadayz got som ballz to do that. at least i kno the people my life will be in the hands of. with they hav to put alot of trust in people they'll never even kno

lol...i got really confused right after you said krazieee but i totally agree with you on the other half of your paragraphhhh
S
yea.. i dont kno wtf happent lol :p

If you look closely at all the pics of the flag, you can see stars slightly in the background. They are not clear because the light from their camera is reflected off of things like the ship, the person, the flag, and even the planet itself. Even a little light makes it hard to see stars at a distance, through a camera.

To address the ripples, all though there is not wind or air on the moon, that makes the flag more susceptable to just plain old gravity waves. There is a couple of pictures with the flag perfectly straight, but the others are more wavy. If you straightened out the flag, it would have a slight stretch when you tried to get all the wrinkles out, since there is no resistance, the material can constrict itself more easily, making it a bitch to straighten.

Now to address the planet scenario..... there are more then 8. :P
